Waikiki was very busy today, probably because its Presidents day. Although it may be because the weather is absolutely spectacular!! Lots of locals on the beach.
Our goal today was to visit the Bishop Museum, Hawaii's oldest and premier museum about Polynesian history and culture. The 1899 stone building is beautiful. The ancient history of the Pacific region is fascinating. It seems there were no indigenous Hawaiians. People, plants and animals arrived via sailing canoe from Polynesia, various south Pacific Islands, even South America. English explorer Capt James Cook "discovered" Hawaii in 1768 and the rest is history.
We got to the museum by way of the Waikiki Trolley. It was about a half hour ride but in the open air bus it was fun way to see lots of the downtown area. Honolulu is a BIG, cosmopolitan city. The resort area runs from where were at one end all the way out to Pearl Harbor.
The beach looks really inviting this afternoon. But the sun is SO strong! We're afraid of sunburn. We'll try it for a few minutes tomorrow.
It was late by the time we got back to our hotel. After freshening up, we walked down Kalakaua Ave, past resort hotels, high end shops and restaurants to the new International Marketplace.This is a three story, very upscale mall, including a two story Tesla store. (A highlight of the evening was a complete demonstration of the Tesla by an energetic young salesman).
Our dinner was at a Japanese restaurant in the mall called Goma Tei Ramen - quite tasty.
Back to the hotel by 9:00 to watch Olympics!
